While writing this, I am looking at the last details needed for the Kids Baptism Class coming up on Sunday, February 9th. Each week when I send out the kids’ sermons, I provide a small summary of the lesson, where in scripture we find the story, and what the “big idea” of the sermon is. Occasionally, depending on the content for that week, I will include an extra note for volunteers to keep an ear out for kids who need a bible, kids who have made the decision to give their life to Christ, or kids who are interested in baptism. The weekend I was gone getting married, I included a note about baptism as the kids’ sermon was from Mark 1:4-11, the story of Jesus’ baptism. A text later that weekend let me know seven kids were interested in learning more about being baptized! Rather than meet individually with seven kids, I decided a class would be a great way for all the kids to learn more and ask questions. Just in case kids had missed the opportunity to express interest on January 5th, I opened registration to all elementary kids. What I have seen is a massive interest in baptism, with 18 kids I have had the privilege to minister to letting me know they would like to learn more. I have been overwhelmed by the beautiful and unexpected feeling of joy for each of these children wanting to celebrate to the world how much they love God and God loves them. What started as a small note in an email to the volunteer leader while I was gone for a weekend has been a powerful reminder of how God can work things so big from our small thoughts and actions. As I finish preparations for the class, I can’t wait to witness the impact the baptism service will have on our kids ministry and the rest of our church family. Pastor Rachel
